When teaching mathematics at St. Helen’s we aim for the vast majority of pupils to achieve the expected standard by the end of year 6, with as many as possible achieving at greater depth. We aim for all children to make outstanding progress. All children will be challenged through extension activities and regular investigations, as well as being inspired to develop accuracy, which will be celebrated widely. They will be given the time, in morning maths sessions and with weekly revision lessons, to practice their key learning. Some children will receive targeted support during lessons and will also benefit greatly from our specialist support sets. With children who have difficulty with maths, we aim to develop competency in the key concepts, in order to build confidence. At the same time, broader concepts, including reasoning, will be introduced, at the right level for the children. Once pupils see their success within key aspects of mathematics they will have the confidence to expand their knowledge and understanding of the whole subject.
