Good morning from PGL Liddington! - Wednesday 20th May
And what a very good morning it is.
Our hopes for a peaceful night were gloriously fulfilled. The sleepover energy and midnight “whispers” of the first night were replaced by thoroughly exhausted, happily zonked-out children… and, as a result, a slightly earlier bedtime for the adults too (yay!).
The skies are still looking a little grey, but we have already had a few sunshine cameos! It’s jackets on jackets off, sunnies on sunnies off kinda day!
Today promises plenty of excitement because every group will be taking on the Giant Swing – historically the most eagerly anticipated, most talked-about and arguably most screamed-about activity at PGL!
There will be nerves, determination, teamwork and one very dramatic moment when the cord is pulled and the children soar high into the sky. It is always a brilliant opportunity to face fears, show courage and cheer one another on.
Wish us luck as we take to the skies and discover just how loudly St Helen’s can squeal when dangling above the ground!
Good morning from Liddington Hall - Thursday 21st May
Positive vibes only here as we continue manifesting the sunshine for our last full day of adventures together!
Yesterday was absolutely action-packed - and what a day it was! The weather continued to keep us on our toes with suntan lotion, caps, waterproofs and layers all permanently at the ready. The children are definitely getting better at remembering everything in their day bags too… after only a few (countless!) reminders π€ͺ
The Big Swing certainly lived up to expectations! Most children reached the dizzying heights of the summit and everyone gave it a fantastic go - cue screams, laughter, white knuckles and plenty of discussion afterwards about harness pain and “killer wedgies”!
It has been wonderful to watch the children facing fears, pushing themselves beyond their comfort zones and making the absolute most of this incredible experience. The camaraderie within the team continues to grow stronger and stronger and the teamwork on display has been something really special to witness.
The sun finally decided to make a proper appearance for last night’s activity: the PGL Tournament! Groups were mixed up and competed in a variety of large-scale traditional games with just the right balance of competitiveness, chaos and high jinks. A brilliant time was had by all!
Spirits were far too high to head straight back to rooms afterwards so we enjoyed another glorious sunset-and-beyond play session out on the field. The cricket club is thoroughly enjoying its unexpected tour with many enthusiastic new sign-ups, the football frenzy continues at pace, and others enjoyed tumbling about, chatting and strolling with friends. Just good old-fashioned fun.
As the evening drew in, we gathered together outside for prayers, thanking God for our families, our friendships and His wondrous creation. It was a particularly special moment as birds flew overhead and we stood together united as our St Helen’s family.
We continue to feel immensely proud of our wonderful children. PGL leaders have showered them with compliments throughout the week - praising their teamwork, manners, composure, resilience and enthusiasm. The superlatives have been flooding in and, incredibly, PGL records are continuing to be broken by our talented and fearless children!
Today we are looking forward to our final full day of activities. All groups are due to tackle abseiling alongside Survivor - where we are fully expecting our budding forest-school experts to continue to impress.
Meanwhile, anticipation for tonight’s disco has now reached fever pitch… watch this space for photos of our fabulous crew in full party mode! ππΊπ»
Good morning from Liddington Hall - our final day! - Friday 22nd May
Dear parents and carers
This morning, we celebrated Aoife and Leo’s birthday -happy birthday, you lovely pair! May your day be as full of fun, laughter and loveliness as you are!
Thursday was another fabulous day! All groups tackled the dizzying heights of abseiling. While not everybody fancied the backwards step off the edge, every single child climbed to the top to enjoy the glorious sunshiney views - which, in itself, felt pretty brave! Plenty of dangling legs, nervous laughter and very proud faces all round.
Our last supper together was full of chatter and excitement as the evening entertainment drew ever closer…
And then… the disco.
Our corridor was transformed into powder rooms and a starry catwalk as our glamorous St Helen’s stars stepped out dressed to impress! The children’s energy was infectious and they created a buzzing, joyful atmosphere that lit up the evening. Cue dance-offs, Macarena madness, knee slides and some very high-paced games of it! The sunset was quite magnificent too - a fitting backdrop to the end of such a special week together.
Bedtime was a little livelier (and later!) than usual, with the disco spirit still very much in the air, but everyone eventually settled down. With bags nearly packed, final Stars of the Day awarded, heartfelt thank-yous shared with our amazing leaders and, of course, the all-important room inspection reveal, we cosied down for our final night.
At 6:15am (!) it was go-go-go. The children “packed” their final bits — good luck with the unpacking at home! We cannot guarantee that the lake washing has been successfully separated from the clean clothes, so caution is advised when opening suitcases… All rooms were swept clear of a week’s worth of contraband sweet wrappers and, despite the early start, they were military efficient — we were very impressed!
The sun has definitely come out to play today: it’s a scorcher! After a week of chasing the sunshine, we are now very much looking for shade. We cannot wait to enjoy our final activities together and make the very most of our last moments as a St Helen’s PGL family.
The children’s behaviour throughout the trip has honestly been excellent. They are an absolute credit to you all and we are truly proud of each and every one of them.
Thank you for entrusting us with your fabulous children — it has been a privilege. We cannot wait to share more stories, photos and memories with you very soon.
ETA of our arrival back to St Helen's will be sent via our office later today.
Kind regards
Mrs Fagan & The Liddington Hall Team
